Market Development Manager

Position Details

Full-time, permanent, salaried, exempt employee. Compensation is nonprofit competitive and commensurate with experience and skill-level.

Summary + Objective 

The Market Development Manager partners with FamilyFarmed’s CEO, Development and Marketing + Communications teams to develop and execute integrated strategic sales and partnership initiatives. This position requires extensive experience creating market development strategies, project management, strong presentation skills, an established network and the ability to deliver both short-term and long-term results while working independently and with others.

The Market Development Manager will build relationships with trade buyers and regional Good Food Producers to educate stakeholders and increase Good Food product sales in the Midwest. As a result of these relationships, buyers and sellers of Good Food will be active in the Good Food EXPO, Good Food Financing and Innovation Conference, Good Food Accelerator, and other FamilyFarmed programs (including government grant-funded projects).

The Market Development Manager is responsible for planning and implementing sponsorship sales and procuring partners for FamilyFarmed special events.

The Market Development Manager is responsible for collaborating with other FamilyFarmed staff to ensure mission and funding alignment of market development activities.

Essential Functions 

  • Stewardship of existing sponsors/partners and securing new sponsors/partners
  • Developing sponsorship collateral materials
  • Sponsorship Sales and deliverable fulfillment
  • Implementing metrics tracking systems to track market development efforts and generating relevant reports through CRM system
  • Identifying and developing a database of prospective Good Food buyers and producers to target for sales and promotional efforts
  • Engaging Good Food buyers and encouraging them to buy product from local producers
  • Assisting producers in developing new products and sales strategies
  • Working with buyers and producers to assess current and new market opportunities
  • Managing programs pertaining to all market development activities in which FamilyFarmed engages, including staff, budget and reporting management
  • Engaging with other internal market systems practitioners and mentors through public speaking opportunities, webinars, peer-to-peer networking events, learning forums, e-discussions, delivery of case studies; and developing and maintaining online tools for potential collaboration
  • Taking the lead in recruiting buyers and sellers to participate in the Good Food EXPO and other events that connect players in the supply chain
  • Assisting in development of new events to connect Good Food buyers and sellers
  • Developing short-term and long-term integrated strategic marketing plans to build sales of Good Food that align with the goals and objectives of FamilyFarmed and its programs
  • Upholding the reputation of the FamilyFarmed by delivering superior client service and demonstrating value to key audiences
  • Building and maintaining positive relationships with internal resources and external partners, vendors and agencies to manage complex projects and ensure timely, high-quality strategy development and deliverables that align to the overall vision and purpose.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

 Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

This is largely a sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending or standing on a stool as necessary.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Typical hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., 40 hours per week.


Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience in sales and business development
  • Ability to negotiate complex partnerships and create multi-level relationships
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills with the ability to work in a team environment both internally and externally
  • Strong business analytics, strategic planning and execution skills
  • Ability to manage vendors and budgets effectively and efficiently
  • Creative thinking with proven ability to bring innovation to projects and processes

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in sales, marketing or business administration
  • Knowledge and experience in negotiating public + private sector partnerships
  • Advanced-level Information/Communication Technology skills
  • Prior Non-Profit experience
  • Government Grant/Program delivery experience
  • Advanced-level understanding of CRM systems and applications
