In response to food safety issues in recent years, FamilyFarmed.org and a broad coalition of food safety leaders have developed the On-Farm Food Safety Project, a comprehensive national program that offers farmers, food safety professionals and agricultural extension specialists technical assistance to develop risk-based food safety programs. The On-Farm Food Safety Project website includes a free, easy-to-use on-line tool, which generates customized on-farm food safety plans based on user input. The tool is based on Harmonized GAP standards developed by United Fresh and industry partners. This tool has been specifically designed for small and mid-scale produce growers to provide them with a full set of record keeping tools to document their food safety program and to provide training to their employees.
FamilyFarmed.org plans to present workshops to farmers to train them how to use the tool to create a food safety plan, as well as on the importance of incorporating food safety best practices into their regular operations. FamilyFarmed.org has also worked with both the USDA and the WI Department of Agriculture on food safety projects.
